Monrovia, Liberia – October 20, 2025 – The National Patriotic Party (NPP) of Liberia has announced a definitive political reaffirmation of the “divorce” from the former ruling Coalition for Democratic Change on Monday, formally distancing itself from its former coalition partner, the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC), and initiating disciplinary action against one of its most prominent members, Madam Jewel Howard Taylor, former Vice Standard Bearer of the coalition.

The NPP issued a strongly worded press release stating that comments recently made by Madam Taylor at the CDC headquarters groundbreaking ceremony in Congo Town last week—where she asserted that the NPP still shared political ties and a “long-standing coalition spirit” with the CDC—do not represent the official stance of the party.
The leadership was quick to clarify that the former Vice President’s claims are strictly her “personal statement,” stressing that the party’s official position must be communicated through the designated channels. The release pointed directly to the NPP Constitution’s provisions 5.1 and 5.6, which clearly designate the Chairman and the Secretary General as the official spokesperson and chief administrator, respectively.
The Coalition Divorce
The core message of the press release confirmed what had been widely speculated: the NPP has officially withdrawn its membership from the Congress for Democratic Change Coalition and has ruled out any possibility of a return. The decision, according to the leadership, was cemented “taking into consideration the level of humiliation meted against its partisans” during the coalition’s tenure.
In a direct challenge to Madam Taylor, the NPP leadership publicly cautioned her “to cease misleading the public” and stop suggesting that the party would support individuals who “prioritize self-interest over the national interest.” This warning signals a definitive ideological and political break between the parties and key political figures involved.
Extraordinary Meeting Scheduled
The fallout from what appears to be Madam Taylor’s unauthorized comments is escalating rapidly. The NPP confirmed it is preparing to convene an extraordinary meeting specifically to deliberate on and determine the appropriate disciplinary action to be taken against her.
Madam Taylor, a powerful figure in Liberian politics, former First Lady and a long-time member of the NPP, now finds herself again, directly at odds with the party’s executive committee, setting the stage for a potential high-stakes internal conflict that could reshape the political landscape. This is a continuation of a long running feud from within the party during its marriage with the CDC.
In a concluding message aimed at maintaining organizational unity, the NPP called on all of its members to remain steadfast, urging them to keep their commitment to the party while the leadership works to strategize and “regain its status in the body politic of Liberia.”

The press release, signed by Bleyah Bobby Addison, Acting Director of Press for the National Patriotic Party, underscored the urgency and official nature of the declaration.
