Maryland County’s Third Major “Crypto Crunch”: Victims Pursue Legal Action

by Rocheford T. Gardiner

HARPER CITY, Maryland County — Following a devastating cryptocurrency hoax in December 2025, victims of the “Wealth Sharing” (WS) trading platform are seeking legal redress. The scam, which duped hundreds of residents, has sparked a wave of reactions and formal legal complaints.

On Friday, February 13, about a dozen of victims gathered at the shuttered WS office on Revy Street in Harper City. Protesters brandished placards and printouts of the “Bonchat” platform interface—the digital gateway used for the scam—alongside copies of business registration documents they claim were used to lure them into the scheme.

The Allegations

The group’s spokesperson, Isaac Hne Jr., identified Mensah Z. Koti and Comfort Smith as the primary faces of the operation. According to Hne, the pair represented the Harper office as a regional hub for Southeast Liberia.

In a strongly-worded petition read to journalists and onlookers, Hne explained that Koti and Smith presented “genuine-looking” Liberian business registrations to build trust. “It was very convincing,” Hne stated, “and so we put our all into it.”

While the victims believe the documents were legitimate at the time, it remains unclear if the papers were authentic or if any investors performed due diligence before committing their funds.

The Financial Toll

The scale of the loss is significant. While Hne claims more than $100,000 USD was siphoned from the community, other local estimates suggest the total could be as high as $400,000 USD.

Legal Action and Arrests

Justice may be on the horizon. Recent reports confirm that police have arrested Koti and Smith. The two officials are expected to make their first court appearance on Tuesday, February 17.

This incident marks the third major cryptocurrency collapse to hit Maryland County in recent years, following the “Unik Explora” scam in 2022 and another significant, unnamed platform failure in late 2024.

However, it will intrigue you to know that – right after the WS swindle in December – two new platforms (“Robot” and “X-Breeding”) have sprung up and yet, hundreds more have been ripped off.
