GANTA, NIMBA COUNTY, Liberia – The simmering internal warfare within the Methodist community keeps escalating into decisive legal confrontations. The Supreme Court of Liberia has again moved to reclaim United Methodist Church (UMC) landmarks from the breakaway Global Methodist Church (GMC), effectively paralyzing the new denomination’s operations in the Gompa District.
The Prohibition Order
Associate Justice-in-Chambers, Yussif D. Kaba, issued an immediate writ of prohibition on Monday, February 23, 2026, targeting all GMC activities within the district. The ruling strikes at the heart of a broadened battle over church identity and assets—a conflict fueled by the GMC’s emergence as a traditionalist alternative to the UMC’s evolving stance on LGBTQ+ issues.
The Court’s intervention grants the United Methodist Church (UMC) Liberia Annual Conference full legal authority to repossess its sprawling infrastructure, citing the UMC as the sole legitimate owner of the contested grounds.
Property Lockdown
The Supreme Court has ordered the GMC to immediately cease usage of several high-profile institutions, including the Ganta Methodist School, the Ganta Mission Hospital & Midwifery Facility and The District Gymnasium and Administrative Offices
The GMC has been ordered to vacate the entire premises pending the outcome of a formal conference scheduled for March 3, 2026, at 11:00 AM, where leadership from both factions will face Justice Kaba.
A Major Blow to the Breakaway Movement

This judicial crackdown represents a massive logistical and symbolic setback for the Global Methodist Church. The timing is particularly devastating; GMC members had been streaming into Gompa City from across the country to celebrate their first annual conference since breaking away in Gbarnga in February 2025.
What was intended to be a victory lap for the traditionalist movement has instead turned into a legal standoff, leaving hundreds of delegates in limbo and the “Methodist battle” firmly in the hands of the nation’s highest court.
