Grand Kru County, Liberia – A river accident on Monday, November 24, 2025 at the Nyankupo Crossing Point, located between Sasstown and Dorbor, resulted in several people narrowly escaping death, with one man currently feared drowned in the Dorbor River.

The Dorbor River main crossing point in Grand Kru County

According to eyewitnesses, a group of travelers from Pleebo City in Maryland County, and surrounding towns gathered early that morning to cross the river. According to reports, they decided to transport passengers across the river first, before moving motorbikes and goods.

Seven individuals then boarded the makeshift raft. However, midway across the river, one side of the raft suddenly dipped, sending all seven passengers into the water.

Four passengers managed to swim to safety, while three were left struggling against the river’s strong current. Community members quickly intervened and succeeded in rescuing two of the struggling individuals. Unfortunately, one man was swept away and remained missing till press time.

Local residents and concerned citizens have since launched a search effort, but the missing traveler, who was reportedly en route from Pleebo in Maryland County, has not yet been found.

The Dorbor River is a vital crossing point for traders and residents of both Grand Kru and Maryland counties. It is a shortcut which saves at least three hours of travel time between Barclayville in Grand Kru County and Greenville in Sinoe County, but becomes dangerous especially during the rainy season.

From all indications, travelers were trying to by-pass the bad route between the two county capitals.
