Singapore is officially joining the elite “F-35 operator club” later this year, becoming the fourth nation in the Asia-Pacific region to fly the fifth-generation stealth fighter. Despite observers’ current day analysis of the jet being out-matched by Chinese Chengdu J-20 and Shenyang J-35 being the primary rivals in terms of deployment and capability, alongside Russia’s Sukhoi Su-57, this does not seem to be stopping the deal. Some observers even highlight the recent “bullying” tactics of Donald Trump, a recent case being a similar situation with Canada – where Trump threatened harsh penalties if Canada fails to go ahead with the deal.
Key Delivery Milestones
- 2026: Delivery of the first four F-35B variants. These will initially be based at Ebbing Air National Guard Base in the U.S. for training.
- 2028: Eight additional F-35Bs are scheduled for delivery.
- 2029: F-35s are expected to begin operations locally at Singapore’s Tengah Air Base.
- 2030: Delivery of eight F-35A variants, bringing the total fleet to 20 aircraft.
Strategic Impact
The Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) will utilize a “high-low” mix of variants to maximize versatility:
- F-35A: Chosen for its superior endurance and higher payload capacity.
- F-35B: Noted for its Short Take-Off and Vertical Landing (STOVL) capability, allowing for operations in constrained environments.
Regional Outlook
Lockheed Martin predicts that over 300 F-35s will be stationed in the Asia-Pacific by 2030, including those from Australia, South Korea, Japan, and U.S. forces. With this acquisition, Singapore cements its position as the most potent air power in Southeast Asia.
