MONROVIA, LIBERIA – The Ghanaian Ambassador accredited to Liberia, His Excellency Godwin Baletum Amonzem, has formally expressed profound regret and condolences following the violent death of a young Liberian man in Ghana. The incident has sparked outrage and concern within the Liberian diaspora and at home.

The victim, identified as 26-year-old Austin Tengbeh, was reportedly killed on February 27, 2026, following a brutal mob attack at an apartment complex in Lashibi, located near the coastal area of Sakumono, outside Accra.

Details of the Incident

According to preliminary reports, the tragedy unfolded late in the evening when a dispute at the residential complex escalated into a targeted assault. While the specific motives behind the mob action remain under investigation by Ghanaian authorities, the severity of the attack has left both communities in shock.

Ambassador Amonzem characterized the killing as “unfortunate and regrettable,” emphasizing that such acts of vigilantism do not reflect the longstanding brotherly relations between Ghana and Liberia.

“The Government of Ghana strongly condemns this act of lawlessness. We are working closely with the relevant security agencies to ensure that justice is served and that the perpetrators are held accountable under the law,” the Ambassador stated during a briefing.

Diplomatic Response and Investigations

The Liberian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been in constant communication with the Ghanaian Embassy to monitor the progress of the investigation. The death of Tengbeh has raised sensitive questions regarding the safety of Liberian nationals living in Ghana, particularly in the wake of sporadic reports of xenophobic undertones in local disputes.

Current Status of the Case:

  • Police Custody: Ghanaian police have reportedly made several arrests in connection with the mob action.
  • Autopsy: Forensic examinations are underway to determine the exact cause of death for the official record.
  • Community Outreach: Local leaders in Lashibi are being engaged to prevent further escalations or retaliatory sentiments.

Regional Implications

The killing comes at a time when West African nations are striving for deeper regional integration through ECOWAS protocols. Diplomatic observers note that swift judicial action is essential to prevent this isolated incident from straining the historical ties between Accra and Monrovia.

Ambassador Amonzem assured the victim’s family and the Liberian public that the Ghanaian legal system would be transparent and thorough. “Ghana remains a home for all West Africans, and we will not allow the actions of a few to mar our hospitality,” he added.
