What began as a joyous occasion at Tubman University—culminating in the commencement ceremony on Monday, November 24, 2025, for Liberia’s second state-owned highest institution of learning—was abruptly overshadowed by tragedy in the early hours of Tuesday. A road accident claimed the lives of two people, including a female student, Agatha Toe.
The tragedy occurred as a group of four, was returning from a night out in Pleebo City, celebrating a friend who had graduated from the university just 13 hours earlier.

The graduate survived the crash, but her friend, Agatha Toe (a current student of the university), and the driver both perished. Both victims who died were seated in the front of the vehicle. Their sedan plunged headfirst into the Fleet River after the driver reportedly lost control, and sank. The exact cause of the accident remains unknown and is under investigation.
A Call for Enhanced Road Safety and Enforcement
This devastating incident serves as another stark reminder of the critical need for safe driving practices and increased vigilance on our roads, particularly during times of celebration when distractions or impaired judgment may be present.
The high human cost of such accidents necessitates immediate action. Increased police patrols are urgently required on major routes, especially at night and around large public events, to strictly enforce traffic laws and deter unwarranted behavior. Furthermore, comprehensive public awareness campaigns emphasizing the dangers of speeding, driving under the influence, and fatigue must be prioritized to prevent future tragedies.
