MONROVIA – The Liberia National Police (LNP), through its Public Safety Department, has issued a formal clarification regarding the recently announced requirements for driver’s license applicants. This follows a period of public debate concerning whether the new mandate would affect all motorists or only those entering the system for the first time.
According to a public notice issued by DCP Fred M. Gaye, Chief of Public Safety of the Liberia National Police, all individuals seeking a driver’s license for the first time are now strictly required to present a valid Driving School Certificate.
Targeted at New Applicants, Not Renewals
The LNP spokesperson emphasized a critical distinction in the policy: the requirement is specifically for “applicants” and not necessarily all current “drivers.” The police clarified that the measure is a prerequisite for the initial application process and does not apply to veteran drivers seeking to renew an existing, valid license.
“An applicant is someone applying to obtain a license, not someone who already holds one,” the spokesperson noted, seeking to allay the fears of long-time drivers who worried they would need to return to driving school to maintain their credentials.
Enhancing Road Safety
The LNP maintains that this new protocol is essential for national safety. By ensuring that every new driver has passed through a recognized driving institution, the police aim to guarantee that all new operators on Liberian roads are properly trained and fully knowledgeable regarding the Rules of the Road.
The official notice states: “This measure is aimed at ensuring that all drivers are properly trained and knowledgeable… promoting safety for all road users.”
The New Process
Under the new guidelines, the Driving School Certificate must be presented before an individual can proceed to the official Police testing and evaluation process. This adds a layer of professional vetting intended to reduce road accidents caused by a lack of formal training.
