KALOWAY, MARYLAND COUNTY – In a move to bolster local commerce and community governance, Maryland County Senator Gbleh-bo Brown officially dedicated two major infrastructure projects in the Kaloway District on Saturday, April 4, 2026. The day-long series of events saw the unveiling of a new market building in Boneken and a modern town hall in Manolu, drawing hundreds of residents, local leaders, and civil society representatives.

A Legacy of Empowerment

Speaking during the town hall dedication in Manolu, which served as the climax of the day’s activities, Senator Brown emphasized that his legislative agenda remains deeply rooted in women’s empowerment. He highlighted his ongoing partnership with the Village Saving Loan Association (VSLA), noting that he has channeled millions of Liberian dollars into the association to provide much-needed loans for local entrepreneurs.

The Senator’s passion for supporting market women is not merely political; it is deeply personal. In a moving tribute, he recalled the tragic loss of his sister, a market woman who was the primary breadwinner during his high school years in Harper.

“She lost her life in the forests of Grand Gedeh after being bitten by a snake while searching for goods to sell,” the Senator told the hushed crowd. “She took care of me when I had nothing. Being able to support market women today brings me a sense of relief and fulfillment, knowing I am honoring her memory by helping others who walk in her shoes.”

Promoting Unity and Maintenance

Regarding the newly constructed Manolu Town Hall, Senator Brown issued a stern caution to the facility’s caretakers. He stressed that while the building stands in Manolu, rather than the district headquarters of Kalokehn, it belongs to the entire district. He urged the community to ensure it remains a space for all citizens to gather, deliberate, and celebrate, regardless of their specific township. Also, one office space each, was allocated for the District Superintendent and the local Magistrate.

Boosting Security and Logistics

In addition to the infrastructure dedications, Senator Brown addressed the logistical challenges facing local law enforcement. He donated a brand-new TVS Star motorcycle to the Joint Security personnel stationed at the Kaloken Checkpoint.

The motorcycle was received by J. Max Roberts, Deputy Police Regional Commander, who thanked the Senator for the intervention, noting that it would significantly improve the team’s ability to patrol and respond to security concerns in that corridor.

Future Developments for Harper and Pleebo

The Senator also used the platform to look ahead, revealing a robust developmental roadmap for other parts of the county. During the earlier dedication in Boneken, he announced that:

  • Two new projects are currently slated for the city of Harper.
  • Construction materials have already been procured for a series of water wells in Pleebo.

These wells are intended to tackle the chronic shortage of safe drinking water in Pleebo, which remains the most densely populated city in southeastern Liberia.

A Community Celebration

The ceremonies were characterized by traditional performances and speeches of gratitude from local chiefs, elders, and the Maryland Marketing Association. Representatives from various women’s groups and civil society organizations praised the Senator for delivering on his promises and focusing on projects that directly impact the rural poor. And as usual, apart from the eating of the traditional “kola nut” ceremonies, a large bull was slaughtered and cooked in the Maryland County’s staple – palm butter, during a large refreshment that had enough for all the guests and townsmen of Manolu.

As the sun set over Kaloway, the mood remained festive, marking a significant milestone in the district’s journey toward improved social services and economic stability.
