Passing the Baton: Reflexions on Leadership and Continuity in Maryland County

By former Maryland County George Prowd

A few days ago, the President of our nation, H.E. Joseph Nyuma Boakai, made the decision to appoint Honorable Nathaniel Semode Toe, Jr. as the new Superintendent of Maryland County, subsequently relieving Honorable Henry B. Cole of the position.

In our political landscape, this is entirely normal. Transition is a shared experience; I have walked this path myself, as have many others.

To Honorable Toe: Congratulations on your preferment. We all wish you the very best as you prepare to steer the affairs of our beloved county.

To Honorable Cole: Thank you for your dedicated service to Maryland County. Your name is now permanently etched into the pages of our history, where future generations will read of your contributions. I join many others in encouraging you to look forward to new opportunities that will undoubtedly come your way, allowing you to continue serving Liberia.

Ultimately, this executive prerogative exercised by our presidents ensures that everyone is given a season to serve. In a nation with a growing number of qualified, competent citizens across our various counties, this rotation is healthy for our body politics.

Finally, Superintendent Toe, the expectation ahead of you is clear: you must sit on the old mat to plait the new one. Learn from the foundation laid before you as you craft the future.

Congratulations once again.
