MONROVIA – In a major move to modernize administrative services and enhance public safety infrastructure, the Liberia National Police (LNP) and the Liberia National Fire Service (LNFS) have officially announced the adoption of a “New Fees” structure. The policy, which was headlined in the Thursday, April 9, 2026, edition of In Profile Daily, marks a significant shift toward digital revenue collection and standardized safety certifications.
The announcement comes following a series of directives from the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning (MFDP) aimed at streamlining government revenue and funding the expansion of emergency response capabilities across the country.
New Fire Safety Certification Standards
The Liberia National Fire Service has introduced a tiered fee system for fire safety certifications, categorizing institutions by their operational risk and scale. According to the official directive, high-risk industrial operations—including factories, logging companies, and hotels—will now be subject to an $85.00 fee. Commercial building permits and specialized fire firm certificates represent the highest bracket at $100.00.
Mid-tier institutions such as banks, hospitals, and large filling stations are set at $60.00, while heavy-duty vehicles, including fuel tankers and trucks, will be assessed at $50.00. Smaller entities, including supermarkets and radio stations, fall into a $35.00 to $45.00 range.
LNFS authorities emphasized that these funds are critical for the Bureau’s mission to safeguard lives and property, particularly as the agency seeks to increase its presence in rural counties.
Police Clearance and Administrative Updates
Parallel to the fire service updates, the Liberia National Police has revised its service fees as it transitions to an online clearance system. The new structure introduces a tiered pricing model based on citizenship status and the urgency of the request:
Liberian Citizens: Regular clearances are set at $10.00, with “Express” services available for $20.00.
ECOWAS Citizens: Fees for regional neighbors range from $50.00 for regular processing to $100.00 for express.
Non-ECOWAS Nationals: International applicants will face fees of $150.00 (Regular) and $300.00 (Express).
The LNP stated that the transition to an online platform is intended to reduce administrative bottlenecks and ensure that all payments are processed transparently through the Liberia Revenue Authority (LRA).
Economic and Public Impact
The government has clarified that all payments can be made in either United States Dollars or the Liberian Dollar equivalent.
While officials argue that the revised fees are a necessary step toward “fighting the fire before its occurrence” and modernizing the police force, some local business leaders have expressed concern. Critics suggest that the cumulative cost of these new certifications may place an additional burden on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) currently navigating a fluctuating economic climate.
However, the Ministry of Finance maintains that the “New Fees” are a mechanical necessity for maintaining the country’s safety standards and ensuring that the LNP and LNFS have the resources required to serve a growing population.
The regulation takes immediate effect, and businesses are expected to comply during their next certification cycle.
