By Rocheford T. Gardiner HARPER, MARYLAND COUNTY – Continuing his streak of developmental initiatives, Senator J. Gbleh-bo Brown officially dedicated a series of completed projects across Harper on Wednesday, April 8, signaling a renewed commitment to local infrastructure.
A New Hub for Barrobo Community
The day’s events began in the Barrobo Community of New Kru Town, where Senator Brown unveiled a newly constructed 300-capacity community center. During the dedication, the Senator reflected on the project’s humble beginnings.
He recalled a bridge dedication in the same area a year prior, where the ceremony had to be held outdoors in the elements. That experience initially sparked the idea for a simple “palava hut.” However, after community members engaged the contractor, Gabriel Tarpeh, the vision evolved into the modern, enclosed hall standing today.
A Message of Gratitude

The highlight of the New Kru Town ceremony was a formal appreciation statement delivered by the community’s youth leader. Speaking on behalf of the elders, women, and youth, the leader expressed profound joy, noting that the hall fulfilled a long-held dream for a central gathering space.
The youth leader characterized the project as a testament to Senator Brown’s vision, thanking him for “remembering his people” and providing a space to foster unity and plan for a better future. The community pledged to maintain the facility as a gift to the growth and peace of Maryland County.
Regional Support and Advocacy
The dedication drew praise from local government officials but also served as a platform for advocacy regarding regional funding.
- Maryland County Superintendent Henry Cole commended the Senator for his unwavering commitment to improving the livelihoods of his constituents.
- Tobyville Township Commissioner T. T. Nagbe Sonpon welcomed the development but urged lawmakers to be more inclusive. He noted that Tobyville has not received government development funds since the 1980s, calling for the township’s immediate inclusion in future county budgets.

The program was climaxed by the presentation of a gift – a beautiful African shirt – to the senator, who promised to use if for their first “African costume” session at the House of Legislature.
Relief for Tubman University Students
Following the ceremony in New Kru Town, Senator Brown traveled to Tubman Town to dedicate a newly constructed bus stop.
The event was attended by scores of Tubman University students who paused their academic schedules to show their support. Senator Brown acknowledged the specific hardships students face while waiting for transport to Pleebo, noting that the new structure provides much-needed shelter and dignity for daily commuters.
In a final show of gratitude, the student body thanked the Senator for the intervention and encouraged him to continue his development efforts for all citizens throughout Maryland County.
